Mentorship Coaching Program
The Alberta Soccer Association’s Mentorship Coaching Program is a great option for coaches wishing to be eligible and prepared for the Provincial – B License. The program is constructed of two distinctive parts. The Mentorship Program is a great option for coaches who like one-on-one feedback and the freedom to design their coach education around their own schedule, with their own team, and on their home pitch.

ASA Technical Director Neil Turnbull had a good turnout on Friday 22 for his presentation on the current discussions and future direction soccer is taking both in our province and across the country. CSA is updating their NCCP certification standards which Alberta will be adopting by 2011. Neil Turnbull also presented background information on the Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) and Long Term Player Development (LTPD) Models that are the foundation of ASA Technical Program’s Strategic Plan as we move forward toward a more unified and strengthened soccer program in Alberta and Canada.

FROM THE DESK OF THE TECHNICAL DIRECTOR
The over-all goal of U-12 "8-A-Side" soccer is to create a safe, supportive, challenging and enjoyable environment. In this environment a strong framework for a young player, to develop their soccer skills and joy for the game, is created through age appropriate learning and instruction. In addition, it will encourage age appropriate physical activity and movement skills through soccer.
Over the past few weeks some discussion has revolved around the term – “non competitive soccer”. The term “non-competitive” soccer is misleading.
When a ball is placed between two individuals, competition is created and inherently exists. In "8-A-Side soccer age appropriate competition exists and due to the smaller number of players on the field – a greater opportunity for competition is created. There is a greater likelihood of more 1 vs. 1 opportunity in the "8-A-Side" game, than in the 11 vs. 11 games.
The term non competitive in this situation, means only that the pressure and stress placed on players created through league structures/standings (at every level) be removed or at the very least down played. In a competitive environment all games should be played to a result. Players know if they won, lost or tied. Do the players really need to see the results posted?
U-12 "8-A-Side" soccer - Clarification – “non competitive” soccer
In conjunction with the Long Term Athlete Development and Long Term Player Development model(s) of Sport Canada and the Canadian Soccer Association (respectively), and with support from Canada Sport four Life (CS4L) Alberta Soccer has launched – U-12 "8-A-Side" soccer (Learning to Train).
In accordance with an athlete’s “Stages of Development”, the U-12 age group fits with Learning to Train and is considered the golden age of learning.
