After VAR was initially introduced at the men’s World Cup in Russia in 2018, FIFA recommended earlier this month that the tool be featured in the Women’s World Cup France as well. On March 15, The FIFA Council “ratified that Video Assistant Referees (VAR) WILL be used at the #FIFAWWC this summer in France.”

In preparation for the tournament, Fischer will join just 15 other officials from around the world at this seminar:

“The FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019 will be the first time that VAR will be used in a Women’s FIFA competition. This is an incredible opportunity to be a part of the preparations for the competition, and to be considered for a role at the tournament,” said Drew Fischer. “There are some amazing referees from around the world, including two trios with Canadian officials, and it is a pleasure to work with them at the highest levels of our sport”

On behalf of Alberta Soccer, congratulations to Drew on this achievement!
