Alberta Premier Jason Kenney confirmed yesterday that the Provincial Government will support Edmonton’s bid to become a World Cup host city, according to a public release that saw Premier Kenney and Minister of Culture Ron Orr announcing the important news.
This update comes at an exceptional time in Canadian soccer, as the Men’s National Team recently booked their tickets to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Being co-hosts of the 2026 World Cup means that our Men’s Team will be a part of two of these tournaments consecutively, an unprecedented achievement for the history of the sport in Canada.
Even though having the Provincial Government’s assistance is an extremely important upgrade, there are still a few details to be resolved in order to confirm that Edmonton will host World Cup games in 2026. Therefore, sharing and spreading the word about soccer in Alberta would greatly help this cause.
