(October 28, 2016) In an impressive feat, Alberta has produced 4 of a possible 8 national champions in the last month. Calgary Foothills U14 Girls, Edmonton Juventus U16 Boys, Edmonton Inter U18 Girls and Edmonton Scottish Men all brought home championship trophies after a week of top quality competition and in some cases, gruelling weather. Additionally, Alberta produced a silver medal finish (Calgary Foothills U18 Boys), two fourth place finishes (St. Albert Impact U14 Boys and Edmonton Northwest United Women), and a bronze medal finalist (Calgary Foothills U16 Girls) *note the U16 Girls finals day were cancelled and the bronze medal game was not played.
2016 represented the last time that the Sport Chek National Championships will feature three youth age groups. As of 2017, only a U-15 and a U-17 Cup will take place. The Challenge and Jubilee Trophy competitions will remain unchanged.
Alberta Soccer would like to congratulate all Alberta teams that participated in the National Championships. Qualifying for this competition is an impressive feat in itself and requires unwavering commitment from the players, parents and coaches alike. Alberta Soccer would also like to thank Lethbridge Soccer for hosting the U-16 Cup. The Association was called on to act as a replacement host for PEI earlier this year and the staff, volunteers and everyone involved in Lethbridge stepped up once again to put on a first class event despite the weather conditions.
