(Friday, September 1) – Beginning tonight, the best amateur adult soccer teams in the province will battle it out at Senior Soccer Fest in Edmonton and Calgary. Throughout the long weekend, a total of 66 teams and nearly 1,200 players will compete in 102 games – all in the hopes of winning one of 13 Provincial Championships and for some, a highly coveted spot at Canada Soccer’s National Championships.
Winners of the men’s Challenge Cup and women’s Jubilee Shield, which are comprised of teams from the Alberta Major Soccer League, will compete for a national title in Surrey, BC in October. Top teams in the Over-35 competitions, Masters Major and Classics Major, will qualify to attend the Western Masters and Classics Championships in Edmonton in late September.
“Much like the Youth Tier I to Nationals competitions that took place last weekend, Senior Soccer Fest is a feature event for senior teams in Alberta. The event represents the best of amateur soccer in Alberta – highlighting the teams’ success from the season and giving them an opportunity to be awarded the Provincial Championship title,” said Richard Adams, Alberta Soccer Executive Director. “We look forward to the high-level soccer that’s sure to take place, and wish all the teams a great weekend!”
To ensure the games are fair, safe, and enjoyable for all, Alberta Soccer has assigned 96 referees to officiate the games. Of these, 25 have been appointed to the Challenge Cup and Jubilee Shield competitions in Calgary, with the end goal of being assigned to a gold medal match on their minds.
Alberta Soccer is excited to once again team up with The Pint Edmonton and The Pint Calgary at Senior Soccer Fest. Every team will receive a Pint gift certificate and Fair Play winners will enjoy additional prizes from the Pint!
We would also like to thank our co-hosts – EDSA, CUSA, and CWSA – for all their work leading up to and at the events this weekend.
