Arctic Winter Games – South Slave Region 2018
Find Your Power
From March 18-24, 2018, the Arctic Winter Games (AWG) will return to Canada after being in Greenland in 2016 and Alaska in 2014. This year’s host – the Northwest Territories South Slave Region – will welcome athletes from nine teams across Northern Canada and the circumpolar world for the 25th anniversary of the Games.
Of the 19 sports included, Futsal represents the largest competition in the Arctic Winter Games, and Alberta Soccer is pleased to be sending both a male and female Juvenile team to represent Northern Alberta.
While the Games are still six months away, the journey to South Slave 2018 has already begun for Team Alberta’s Futsal coaches, Christine Reid and Shervin Hajami.
Christine, a C License Certified and B License Trained coach, has been involved in Grande Prairie’s soccer community as a player, coach, parent, and board member for the past 16 years.
“I enjoy all aspects of coaching, but particularly like watching how the players’ confidence builds as they master new skills they never thought possible,” Christine explained. “I am really excited for the opportunity to be involved with the AWG.”
The boy’s team will be led by Shervin, a Provincial B Licensed coach who has worked with the Fort McMurray Youth Soccer Association, Keyano Huskies, and the St. Albert Impact.
Of his experience as a coach, Shervin explains that, “Soccer/Futsal is a people’s business. I hold this very close to my heart in a sense that I believe we sing, cry, dance, cheer, we rise and we fall in Soccer and Futsal, however we do all of this, together. This togetherness is the only thing that ever-made sense to me. I aim to bring more and more people together through the sports of Soccer and Futsal.”
The initial tryouts for the teams will begin this month in Grande Prairie and Fort McMurray.
A link to register for tryouts (and tryout dates) will be provided shortly – stay tuned here
